Purpose

The goal of FreeBSDToGo is to make it fairly easy to make bootable FreeBSD CDs, and to keep these CDs up-to-date with the latest FreeBSD source code. Unlike many bootable CD projects, such as the "Linux Bootable Business Card", FreeBSDToGo is not a general purpose .iso image that you download, burn, and install. Instead, it is a toolkit, designed to help you create your own bootable CDs.

Unlike at least one bootable FreeBSD CD project, FreeBSDToGo does not (by default) heavily modify /etc/rc or other system startup scripts. This helps keep the bootable environment as close to a "normal" FreeBSD environment as possible, so that fewer headaches are created for the user.

Download

The latest release of FreeBSDToGo can be downloaded from SourceForge.net.

Documentation

The FreeBSDToGo Instructions should help you create your first bootable CD. The FreeBSDToGo Bundle Documentation should help you modify the default CD to your liking. The source code for this project (a makefile, a shell script, and some configuration files) should be well-documented, too. If you run into trouble, check out the SourceForge Forum, to see how other users have been helped.

The original author of FreeBSDToGo is Larry Lansing. He can be e-mailed at lansil@rpi.edu. He uses FreeBSDToGo to create bootable CDs that are used by over 1,000 RPI students each semester.
